Having a top-of-the-line kitchen gadget such as a KitchenAid stand mixer streamlines various cooking procedures. Regardless of your preferred cuisine, the KitchenAid mixer is bound to have a function that suits your needs.
Despite its high cost, the KitchenAid Stand Mixer is expected to function perfectly for an extended period. Although this may not always be true, some issues may not be as severe as they appear.

What Should I Do If My KitchenAid Mixer Won’t Start?
If your KitchenAid Stand Mixer is not turning on, the first step to resolve the issue is to troubleshoot the appliance. It is advisable to seek assistance from KitchenAid’s customer support for effective troubleshooting.

The first step is to identify the issue, and typically, the most frequent problem with KitchenAid stand mixers is an overheated motor. Since the motor has thermal protection, it will not restart until it has cooled down.
When your KitchenAid Stand Mixer fails to turn on even after waiting for 15-30 minutes, the second most frequent issue is an electrical problem. In such cases, it is necessary to investigate further by examining the plug and outlet used for the appliance.
Here are five simple steps you should follow:
- Ensure that the appliance is correctly connected to the outlet
- Ensure that the GFCI-outlet your mixer is connected to has not been reset.
Are you familiar with Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter outlets? I’m sure you are. These GFCI outlets come with two buttons, a red one that says “Reset”, and a black one that says “Test”.
To check the outlet, perform a test and reset. Upon pressing the test button, the reset button should pop out; if it fails to do so, there may be an issue with the GFCI outlet or a lack of power supply.
- Inspect the circuit breaker that governs the outlet
- Verify that the mixer‘s cord is undamaged.
If none of the previous solutions have resolved the issue, you might need to disassemble your KitchenAid mixer to repair it. However, keep in mind that if your appliance is still covered by a warranty, attempting to fix it yourself could result in the warranty becoming void.
It is not recommended that you perform this action, and I cannot assume responsibility for any consequences that may occur with your KitchenAid Stand Mixer.
Having said that, I have successfully repaired my KitchenAid mixer by replacing the defective components.
One of the most probable reasons for the mixer not starting is due to one of these components:
- Speed control-plate: Ensure that the cords are correctly attached to the speed control plate, and if there is any issue with the wiring being faulty or loose, reconnect it.
- The phase control board of the mixer: The instructions for the speed control plate are also applicable in this case.
- Carbon motor brushes: If one of the brushes is worn down shorter than 5/16-inch, it is recommended to replace both brushes.
- The internal wiring of the KitchenAid stand mixer: If you find any broken wires in the power cord, it is recommended to either replace or repair them.
Why Do KitchenAid Mixers Overheat?
Although KitchenAid mixers are powerful enough to handle difficult tasks, they can be subjected to wear and tear when performing them. For instance, mixing pizza dough may require the mixer to operate at a high level for an extended period.
As a result, the mixer may produce excessive heat that can harm the motor, but KitchenAid mixers come equipped with a high-temperature fuse that safeguards the motor by turning off the appliance when it reaches dangerous temperatures.

What Can I Do To Prevent My KitchenAid Mixer From Overheating?
Upon receiving my KitchenAid stand mixer, I exercised great care and caution by adhering to the recommended running time and closely monitoring its performance.
As I became accustomed to using my KitchenAid Stand Mixer, I began to overlook its value and eventually allowed it to complete tasks while I multitasked at home.
On a certain day, I arranged the mixer and abandoned it to attend to the laundry. While doing the laundry, I completely forgot about the mixer. Later on, I began hearing an unusual sound emanating from the kitchen, which jogged my memory that I had left my mixer turned on.
After struggling with the dough for an extended period, the mixer overheated and eventually shut down, leaving me feeling foolish and wondering if I had wasted my money on a $300 appliance.
Fortunately, the mixer automatically turned off to protect the motor from harm, but it was a valuable lesson for me. I have gained knowledge about mixers and overheating from this experience.
For heavy ingredients, it is recommended to limit the mixer’s operation to 10 minutes to avoid overheating. It is advisable to take a break before continuing with the mixing process. However, when dealing with lighter ingredients, the mixer can be used for up to 20 minutes.
It is important to avoid running your KitchenAid Stand Mixer for longer than the recommended time as it may face difficulty in functioning and eventually overheat or sustain damage.
It is not advisable to begin using your mixer on high-speed; instead, it is recommended that you start with the lowest setting to prevent overheating. As the dough becomes more manageable, gradually increase the speed of the mixer for better results.
When dealing with a dense dough, I always keep the speed at or below 2.
Finally, it is important to stay near the mixer while it is in use to ensure that it properly mixes your ingredients. Once you have set up and started the appliance, be sure to monitor its performance as it works through the ingredients.
Can I Reset My KitchenAid Mixer?
For certain models of the KitchenAid Stand Mixer, an overload reset button is available that becomes visible when the mixer overheats, and to use it, you should turn off the mixer and wait for a few minutes until it cools down before pressing the reset button.
If your KitchenAid Stand Mixer does not have a reset button, the best course of action is to switch it off and wait for it to cool down before turning it back on.
